Shelley Shanks previous commercial artwork commissions are a reverent homage to the unnoticed people that in essence, give the world the energy it needs in order to function. Building upon this latter work, her collaboration with Sergio Santos will elevate the project to newer heights. The duo will initially explore an oil rig owned by the Larue family and situated on Eastham Prison grounds for the first leg of the project.
Both artists feel that the crux of the project lies in engaging the people and the narratives of the rigs. This focus is not limited to the roughnecks, and will include the people that maintain work for these blue-collar heroes through turbulent economies as well as better times. The Larue family history is particularly intriguing and will be equally vital to this first project.
The collaboration seeks to evolve Shanks paintings, by focusing the composition as well of the photography by Santos. In addition, video documentation and photography by Santos will add an extra dimension to the project. The artists will further the collaboration even more by incorporating Santos imagery into Shanks paintings, as well as Shanks painting on the actual imagery.
Ultimately, the multimedia scope of the project will lend high marketability to completed pieces by both artists. The depth of the project will make the artwork attractive to art dealers, reps, galleries, commissions and museum collections.
